Our Story

Generations of Expertise,
One Petal at a Time

1955

The Legacy

Blooming From the Beginning

Homestead’s story began when Peter Albers, a trained nurseryman,
emigrated from Holland in 1955. After 10 years working at
Vineland Horticultural Station, he grew a passion

for the flower industry.

1968

The Legacy

Planting the Seeds of a Legacy

Peter and Johanna Albers founded Peter Albers and Sons,
the family’s first greenhouse business, specializing in
vegetables and bedding plants.
Their dedication to quality growing and strong industry relationships
laid the foundation for future expansion and success in horticulture.

1980

The Legacy

A New Generation Takes Root

All four children spent time working in the family greenhouses but the eldest son John
took a special interest in the business.  In 1980 John purchased and
expanded the greenhouse business and renamed it Can Gro Greenhouses.
The focus of the business changed to potted plant production
specializing in potted chrysanthemums.

1991

The Legacy

The Calla Lily Transformation

In 1991, John explored a wide range of flower cultivars, searching for a strategic addition to our product offerings.
After trialing numerous options, it was the Calla Lily that truly stood out.
Its elegant form, vibrant colours, and strong market appeal resonated not only
with the team but also with customers. Recognizing its potential, focus shifted
to cultivating premium Calla Lilies,  a decision that would shape the future of the
business and establish Homestead Growers as a leaders in the industry.

2006

The Legacy

Expanding South for Year-Round Growth

In 2006, we looked for the optimal location to extend our growing season.
This led us to Apopka, Florida, where the sun shines for free, allowing us to produce
high-quality plants year-round. Our footprint has grown from a trial bench to over
1,000,000 square feet of controlled-environment production space!

2022

The Legacy

Growth Continues in South Carolina

In 2022, we expanded our U.S. operations into York, South Carolina.
The climate offers a balanced mix of Ontario and Florida weather,

allowing for exceptional quality for Spring and Fall production.

Present

The Legacy

Growing Forward

Today, we continue to push boundaries with new product lines,
advanced logistics, and cutting-edge growing techniques. With ongoing expansion of our facilities,
introducing new plant varieties, and refining our processes, we are maximizing
both quality and quantity to meet ever-growing demand.
Our commitment to excellence drives us to innovate, ensuring that our customers
receive the the highest quality plants year-round.
